History Of Middlegate 

A rural Nevada community with lots to offer, Middlegate’s legacy was cemented in 1860 when it was first established as a Pony Express station. The station was used by travelers from all over, looking for respite and to change their horses after a long trip. The station remained in operation until the early 1900s, when the Lincoln Highway–America’s first paved transcontinental highway–was built nearby and soon shifted local travel patterns for good. No longer an essential outpost for the wandering traveler, Middlegate Station evolved over time into a bar, café, and motel–once again serving the community as a restful stop along a stretch of road and solidifying its role in local history.

The legendary Shoe Tree of Middlegate, a massive cottonwood and popular attraction, sits just 2.4 miles east of Middlegate Station and is submerged in local folklore. Although the original Shoe Tree was sadly cut down in 2010, locals and visitors alike rallied together to continue the tradition by decorating a new tree with footwear. And, of course, people also come from all round to fuel-up at Middlegate Station–and I’m not talking about gas. Offering quality service and food options for everyone, their menu features classic favorites like burgers, sandwiches, salads, steak, and chicken. For the more daring eater, there is the infamous Middlegate Monster Burger challenge, which dares visitors to attempt to finish a truly massive burger in one sitting.
