Officially known as the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, the name TOPGUN carries a legacy larger than its origins. The now iconic nickname was given to the school by the tactical department of Fighter Squadron 2–born out of convenience, as it was simply easier to say. Despite the lack of ceremony in landing upon this moniker, the level of service and excellence it represents today is completely immeasurable.

Beyond The Hollywood Lens

While Hollywood and pop culture has glamorised the program with movies such as Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022), the real TOPGUN is about more than boisterous, high-speed aerial stunts and dramatic rivalries. The true heart of the TOPGUN program is synonymous with aviation excellence, earning it notoriety for producing highly-skilled, humble men and women who fly without ego. Students and instructors alike train relentlessly, study hard, and exude professionalism, ensuring the Navy can keep its edge against adversaries. More than flying–the TOPGUN program is focused on nurturing the best tactical minds in aviation.

Finding A Home In Fallon

When the original movie hit theaters in the 80’s, the real TOPGUN program was still based at NAS Miramar in San Diego. However in 1996, following Miramar’s transition to a Marine Corps Air Station, the program was relocated to NAS Fallon, Nevada, and merged with the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center. In 2015 the center was renamed as the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, but its core mission remained the same– serving as the Navy’s center of excellence for aviation training and tactics development, providing flight training, instructional classes, and direct operational support.

The TOPGUN Program Today

From orchestrating large training exercises to publishing a variety of technical and tactical publications authored by the staff, the TOPGUN program continues to stand as the center of tactical thought and theory in Navy and Marine Corps fighter training. The tactics being developed today at the Navy Fighter Weapons School aim to enable tactical aircrews to consistently carry out aggressive and successful fight tactics against the enemy for generations to come. While only a select few go on to fly in real-world combat missions, most TOPGUN graduates become valued instructors and mentors, passing their expertise along to ensure the future of this program continues on the path of greatness.

Since being established in 1969, TOPGUN has continued to evolve in order to meet the demands of modern warfare while still keeping the heart of their mission. As technology continues to advance, so too does the valuable knowledge passed down to prepare pilots for any and all combat situations. For over 50 years TOPGUN has been synonymous with aviation excellence, and if their unwavering dedication to training the next generation of aviators and keeping the Navy at the forefront of air combat is any induction, it’s undoubtedly a reputation that is set in stone.
