For the seasoned off-roader to the curious newcomer, Sand Mountain is a must-visit destination. Sandstone Mountain is a popular spot in Fallon for taking up thrilling activities like off-roading, due to its towering mounds of windblown sand. ATV and off-roading enthusiasts near and far have flocked to this off-roading paradise for decades.

The History Behind The Dunes

Formed around 9,000 years ago from the remains of the ancient Lake Lahontan, Sand Mountain is the largest single dune in the Great Basin. Spanning 4,795 acres–roughly 3.5 miles long, 1 mile wide, and soaring 600 feet high–this ever-changing natural wonder is constantly shape-shiftsing into something new. Its rolling golden peaks and valleys create an off-roading paradise, where every peak holds a fresh opportunity for adventure.

Off Roading Adventures

Located just 25 miles east of Fallon, Sand Mountain Recreation Area welcomes up to 70,000 visitors a year to its infamous high-desert dunes. Off-roaders come from far and wide to ride ATV’s, motorcycles, sand rails, and dune buggies. Other opportunities for recreation  include sand sailing, sand boarding, and side by side. For those looking to extend the adventure, you can also find a designated camping area available near the base of Sand Mountain–perfect for spending a night under the stars.

Must-See Landmarks

Beyond the seemingly infinite rolling dunes, Sand Mountain also boasts 23 miles of designated trails, created in 2008 to protect the Kearney Buckwheat habitat–home to the endangered Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly, a subspecies of the Pallid Dotted-Blue Butterfly. Found only in this area due to a dependence on the Kearney buckwheat plant, conservation efforts of both the land and species are especially important. Those looking for more beyond off-roading can explore the Sand Springs Pony Express Station, one of 150 such stations built in the mid-1800’s to deliver mail, messages, newspapers, and packages across the country. Today the area is part of the Sand Springs Desert Study Area, where the ruins remain as a fascinating glimpse through time, even being recognized as such by the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. With a blend of adventure and history, Sand Mountain’s unique landmarks undeniably make it a destination worth visiting.

Whether you find yourself taking adrenaline-fueled rides through the dunes, exploring the local history, or simply marveling at its vast beauty, Sand Mountain promises an incredible experience for everyone. With its ever-shifting landscape you’ll find no shortage of opportunities for creating thrilling experiences as you set off on your off-roading adventure. Open 24/7 year-round (weather permitting, of course), it’s always the perfect time to kick up some sand and create unforgettable memories.
