Spring has sprung, offering an abundance of special events in Fallon

spring-wings-blog This spring, good times abound in Fallon, inviting locals and visitors alike to enjoy everything from hidden cave tours to the annual Spring Wings birding festival.  So get ready for some Mississippi-style country music, drag racing and more this March and April.

Hidden Cave Tours

Visitors are invited to explore Hidden Cave during tours March 8 and 22 departing from the Churchill County Museum at 9:30 a.m. Participants caravan to the site to learn about the cave’s ancient history, from creation in 21,000 BCE to use by the northern Nevada Paiute tribe. Named for its small, unseen entrance, Hidden Cave surprisingly has a large interior with enough room for large groups. The free tour also explores petroglyphs left by ancient peoples.

Paul Thorn Band

The Churchill Arts Council presents the Paul Thorn Band March 22. Thorn’s blend of rock, blues and country has been characterized as “going to church with a six-pack.” Come out to the Barkley Theatre for a concert that’s unabashedly Southern to take in Thorn’s brand of crowd-pleasing music, which recently broke into the Billboard top 100. Tickets are $20 for non-members and $17 for Churchill Arts Council members.

Drag Racing

Engines rev up for the Top Gun Raceway season opening Test and Tune event March 29 from 10 a.m. – 4 pm. NHRA, pro, amateur and circuit drag race cars burn the first rubber of the year with test trials before main races begin in the afternoon. Races throughout the season highlight funny cars, pro modified, jet cars, nostalgia hot rods and top fuel dragsters.

Home & Garden Show
For those who prefer a quiet afternoon outside, April 12 – 13 brings the Fallon Soroptimist’s Home & Garden Show to the Fallon Convention Center. Take in a variety of offerings from area artisans, crafters and culinary professionals and maybe even take home a handmade item or two.

Fallon High School Rodeo

The best high school ropers and riders put their skills to the test at the Nevada State High School Rodeo Association (NSHSRA) Fallon Rodeo April 12-13. Competitors go head to head in all of the rough stock and barrel racing events in the hopes of making it to the Final event. Don’t miss the opportunity to watch these kids show off the best rodeo talent in Nevada at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

The area lies on the Pacific Flyway and is home to hundreds of species of birds, perfect for birdwatchers of all levels.
